What Is Your Republican Candidate Doing This Saturday Night?

One of the more humorous moments that came out of the recent New Hampshire debate in my opinion was George Stephanopoulos’ question at the end of the evening.  He asked each of the candidates where they would be on Saturday night if they weren’t busy debating each other.

There was some humanity in the answers.  There was more than a little bit of folly.  And of course there were some careful crafted political responses.

Here was each person’s response.

Rick Perry – “I’d probably be at the shooting range.”

Yes!  I love this answer!  Spoken like a true Texan.  I might have jumped on the Perry bandwagon a few months ago had I heard candor like this (and assuming he didn’t make all those subsequent mistakes).

Newt Gingrich – “I’d probably be watching the college championship basketball game.”

Except there isn’t a “college championship basketball game” taking place until early April.  He obviously meant the college football national championship game (as others quickly pointed out for him).  But that game didn’t take place until Monday night.  The only football game taking place on Saturday was the BBVA Compass Bowl game between 7-5 Southern Methodist and 6-6 Pittsburgh.  And I doubt they’re playing for anything other than money.

Rick Santorum – “I’d be doing the same thing with my family.  We’d be huddled around and we’d be watching the championship game.”

A little twist on the Gingrich answer with some good old family values thrown in.  A good safe answer but nothing exciting here.

Mitt Romney – “Afraid it’s football.  I love it.”

Wow!  A lot of Compass Bowl fans in the room.  But that’s three answers of football in a row.  Where’s the originality?

Ron Paul – “I’d be home with my family but if they all went to bed I’d probably read an economic textbook.”

Strangely, I believe him.  I can totally see him sitting on the couch reading up on the Black-Scholes options pricing model or something.

Jon Huntsman – “I’d be on the phone with my two boys in the United States Navy because they’re a constant reminder of what is great about this nation and awesome about the emerging generation in this country.”

Barf!  F for creativity.  This is way too much a political answer.  I don’t doubt that he calls his sons on the weekend or is proud of them and all our servicemen but c’mon!  I wanted to hear stories about how he plays canasta with the folks down at the senior center or something like that, not another “let’s support our troops” message.
