TV Shows You’d Think I Hate (But That I Actually Love)

With two young girls at home, free time is at a minimum.  The oldest usually hits the sack by around 8PM and once we clean up and recover from the day’s events, we’re left with about 30 minutes or so of time to relax.  Our girls are pretty high energy so our relaxing activity of choice is often times catching up with what we’ve recorded on the DVR.

We find the choices for quality television kind of lacking nowadays so we’ve found ourselves drifting toward some of the “alternative” choices on cable (i.e. reality).  Most of these shows are trash and serve no real substantive purpose in our lives.  I turn away from most of these shows but there are a few that I find myself strangely addicted to.  For some reason, I can’t seem to turn away.  I need more of it!

Whether it’s the catfights or the trainwrecks, these are five shows that you’d think I have no reason to enjoy but for some reason I do!

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

I started by watching the Real Housewives of Orange County back when that started but now I’ve switched over to Beverly Hills.  There should be nothing theoretically appealing about watching a bunch of ridiculously rich women plan expensive parties and complain about why their limo is late but for some reason I keep getting sucked into their drama.  These women fight like cats and dogs constantly and I always a sucker for some good trainwreck television so I think that might be where the appeal is.

Hoarders

I understand that doctors say these people have an illness and in many cases can’t help themselves.  But how in the world can people allow their living situations get so atrociously bad?  In most cases, the physical damage to themselves and their homes is the minor part.  Most have destroyed friendships and family relationships beyond repair.  I guess seeing if these families can come back from the point of no return (or the ensuing arguments) is the hook for me.

Pretty Little Liars

If there’s one show I shouldn’t be watching it’s one whose premise is four high school girls struggling with high school girl issues while trying to avoid becoming victims of a mysterious killer.  Yet my wife I watch this show on DVR every week.  I think this show appeals to me in the way that the old Beverly Hills 90210 did.  Its plots are so over the top ridiculous that you can’t help but find it entertaining.  Sometimes a little mindless entertainment and teen angst are just what the doctor ordered.

The Millionaire Matchmaker

I admit that I really don’t get this show.  These guys (and the occasional girl) are millionaires yet can’t seem to find a date (some though have personality deficiencies that become readily apparent).  These guys are quite successful yet are being matched up with girls who are in many cases out of their league looks-wise.  So what you get is the hot young girl dating the older less attractive guy with the main connection being that the girl wants a guy with money.  The result is sometimes painfully awkward to watch and the couples usually have a success rate similar to that of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette.

WWE Monday Night Raw

Yes, you could argue that an adult male watching oiled up men roll around in a ring wearing nothing but tights is wrong on all sorts of levels.  But I’ve been watching it for as long as I can remember and I can’t bring myself to turn away from it now.  Granted, I don’t get into it nearly as much as I used to but I still get all riled up to see a missile dropkick off the top ropes!

What say you?  What shows do you watch as a guilty pleasure?  Feel free to comment below.

Hi Dave! Thanks for following my blog =) I’m intrigued by the mix of pop culture and politics on your blog and will definitely be checking it out more!

And I know what you mean about guilty-pleasure television – I myself am obsessed with Gossip Girl because of the bitchy drama and some of the more superficial elements. And I find Hoarders horridly fascinating as well. Definitely trying to stay away from reality TV though, which is much easier given we don’t have cable.

Thanks for the visit! I truly try to limit the amount of trash TV I watch every week. Alas, these still make the cut. I’m not perfect!

Thanks for stopping by! And good for you trying to stay away from it. Sometimes I wish I was stronger.

Hey Dave! I have to admit, I typically despise reality TV, but Hoarders is one that I like to indulge in too. Something about how tragic the people are keeps me coming back (or glued to because I find it’s on in marathon-style where I live) to watch it. If you find some enjoyment in your guilty-pleasure shows good on you!
Thanks for following, I’m intrigued by your commentary.

I can’t help but watch Hoarders. These people’s lives have just completely come off the rails.

Dave, Dave, Dave…you had me (sort of) until the “wrasslin!” Although I haven’t seen Liars or Matchmaker, I like Hoarders (when not too disgusting) and that one that I used to watch called Obsessed. Have never been able to stand more than 5 minutes of any housewife. But I too find that a little reality to escape from reality is just what the doctor ordered: America’s Next Top Model (b1tchy cat fights & drammmmma), Hell’s Kitchen, Next Iron Chef (this all star one is kewl), Chopped & Cupcake Wars. Yeah I am a chef and watch a lot of cooking TV.
Unreality: Dexter, Homeland (awesome), Boss, Bored To Death, House, Fringe

Wrestling is a lifelong things so that’s my excuse. I can’t try ANTM under any circumstances.

Hi, Dave. I must admit, those weren’t the five shows I would have expected. I’ve also watched some “Hoarders” episodes — kind of disgustingly fascinating, isn’t it. I think the writers strike a few years ago really left us at the mercy of this reality garbage — but there are times 😎

Yeah, unfortunately reality is cheaper and quicker to produce than something scripted. I agree it’s here to stay.

Hey! Thanks for the follow! (I don’t really watch TV, but I watched every episode of the Bad Girls Club this season… its ridiculously entertaining) and I started getting into all the stuff on the Food Network, especially Iron Chef and Chopped 🙂

I watched a season of Celebrity Fit Club (another favorite) that had one of the girls from Bad Girls Club on it. Boy, was she exhausting to watch! Way too much anger. I don’t think even I could make it through that show.

I love hoarders! 😛 I think it’s in our nature to rubber neck. I mean, I don’t think ANYONE can deny having craned their necks just a bit to see the carnage when they pass an accident. We love the messy, gritty bits. And similarly, I suppose we like the annoying, ridiculous, pointless bits sometimes too! We’re so limited to our own little worlds. It’s no wonder that we’re so eager to see the other ones. Even if they are presented as terrible reality television. ha. I can’t say I can stomach any of these other shows (I’m not a big TV watcher) but I can relate to their appeal! As for pretty little liars, I don’t watch it, but most of the other absurd ABC family shows suck me in just the same. A good mind numbing is just the thing, sometimes. I find your blog informative and entertaining. Good stuff! 🙂 (also, thank you for following mine (if you can call its contents a blog…))

I agree. Of all the shows I watch, I think Hoarders is the one I can’t turn away from. It’s just like you want to see how much further they can fall.

That hoarders show is creepy! I’ve only seen it a few times, but it always shocks me!

I really can’t believe sometimes how some people can let things get that bad. All that trash, animal feces, bugs, rodents, rotting wood, etc. How can someone live like that?
